Scams and Indian companies

January 7th, 2009

With the Satyam scam unfolding, I would not be surprised if 2009 is the year of scams for India Inc.
Having worked for a BSE30 companies, with many customers also BSE 30 companies, I got a very good idea of how Indian companies work, their decision taking process and how well they are run.
From a distance, they may have an attractive image (thanks to their PR agencies ) , but you work closely, nothing remains hidden. Till 6 months ago, no one cared much for the PSUs, but some of them are very efficiently run.

It is many of family run companies which cause alarm. When the owners spend millions on expensive business jets, cars or gifts to their wives /girlfriends it is a cause for alarm.

I remember reading somewhere that if you see the management of a company in too many page 3 type or society photos, it is a sure sign that the company is going downhill. Most of our media only glorify these excesses when they should raise the alarm bell. If you are making a lot of money from your business, invest it back, don’t waste it on luxuries, but unfortunately this does not happen in India.

Why Indian chapter?

January 6th, 2009

A few days ago, there was an article about some one starting an Indian chapter of W**. He got a lot of coverage in the media.

I wonder why for any internet product or service, people don’t start foreign chapters of an Indian product or service, why is it always the other way round?  Why does the colonised attitude exist eeven today

The coming crash

January 4th, 2009

Though some financial newspapers still carry a lot of hyped news, all the actual signs point to a crash in the economy. 2 days ago I had gone to a big private sector bank to deposit a transfer cheque. There I saw notices pasted everywhere about change in work timings, so they are trying very hard to cut costs. After 15th Jan , I think stock markets will crash.

War and peace

December 29th, 2008

There is a lot of talk of war in the newspapers. First there was unofficial war, now there seems there will be a conventional war. Wonder why the people in charge cannot formulate a better strategy to deal with this problem

Self Defense

December 23rd, 2008

Some time back I read a report by a Japanese newspaper on India’s foreign policy. They said that despite being such a large country with a huge population, it is a soft country. Most of the rulers cannot defend the country, they are always looking to others for approval.
There is a good article on the colonised minds of the elite in India. Till the mindset changes, things will never improve.

Shining or not

November 30th, 2008

Till 6 months ago, there was a lot of hype in the media about  India shining and India as the next super power.  I think the newspaper editors are brainwashed or too busy attending parties, they did not realize the reality.  They think that politicians who speak in English with the right accent are efficient.

A country which cannot defend itself, where terror attacks take place on a weekly basis,  will never be considered a superpower by other nations, whatever the English media may print.   I wish the editors took a crash course in history and economics.

Newspapers as PR agencies

February 17th, 2008

It only happens in India - newspapers start PR agencies

A few years ago,  I spent a lot of time analysing the accuracy of  news stories and was surprised how easily it was manipulated.  At times  I wonder why they cannot be neutral.

Stock market crashes and hype

January 22nd, 2008

Stock market crashes  - seems the stock market bubble is bursting, most of it was media hype anyway.  If your turnover or profits are not increasing, how can your company be so valuable?

I had seen first hand how big Indian companies are run, so I knew this was going to happen.  I had invested some amount in mutual funds in 2001 when I had just left my job and had some money from leave encashment. The Sensex was below 3000 then.  After that I have always invested in  my own business, you have better control over the returns unlike publicly traded companies , where you may end up sponsoring exotic foreign junkets and a lot of other “official expenses”.

IT sector responsible for poor roads

November 18th, 2007

IT sector responsible for poor roads  - Interview with  Larsen & Toubro’s  MD.  I strongly feel that the hype in the media today about the IT sector and the craze for an MBA is responsible for the infrastructure mess today.

I worked in L&T for several years (I left because I always wanted to start my own business ) and after interacting with  people outside, I feel it  offers the best working environment for an engineer fresh out of college.

In contrast, in the IT sector, you write code and work on a single project for months.  Unfortunately , due to media hype and high salaries, most of the better engineers today either join the IT sector or do an MBA.  You have to be really thick skinned to ignore people  who ask you what is “wrong”  with you, why you are not doing an MBA or joining an IT firm.  Software languages can be learnt at any time, I do the coding required for my websites myself, but you learn to design and manage engineering projects only from practical experience.

If the IT firm is developing its own products, it is OK,  but most Indian companies are  just IT sweatshops doing low end work.  And if all the good civil engineers are working as cybercoolies in IT companies, why are people so surprised that the roads are so bad?

Another BPO employee murdered

November 4th, 2007

BPO employee murdered . Another BPO employee murdered and the statement of  the Wipro BPO president is typical big company speak.  At  the end of  the day , when you do a ”naukri” , you remain at the mercy of  your employer , who usually is not bothered about your personal safety despite whatever their PR agencies/media  put out.

When I had a 9-5 job, I once had to go to meeting in a North Indian city to finalise things urgently, it was supposed to end late . When I asked the manager to arrange for accomodation, I was told ,  ” Go to Karol Bagh, and check into any hotel”.   I told the admin department directly to book me the last flight to Mumbai.  I have stayed in Mumbai for long and have  managed to reach home even after midnight when flights are delayed, as it has a fairly efficient public transport system, but in a new city (especially in North India) it is an unnecessary risk.

A few months later, a junior colleague came to me and said the manager was asking her to go to some project site / customer’s place in North India alone.  Many of the sites are in remote locations, for example LPG cylinder refilling projects were  about 25 km away from the nearest town/city as an explosion there can cause loss of  life.  She had refused citing personal safety, the manager told her ” look at N (myself) , she travels to many project sites alone. “  I should have made more noise.

I have personally  not faced any problem since I am very conservative, but I have heard enough stories while travelling. To be fair,  at some regional offices in smaller cities, people have gone out of their way to check with me if everything is OK, but finally one incident like this puts you off.
